Modular Trail Structures was selected by J.E. Dunn Construction to engineer, fabricate, and construct the signature boardwalk for the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library—a defining feature of the campus that invites visitors to experience the North Dakota Badlands that inspired Theodore Roosevelt.
This one-of-a-kind boardwalk is unlike any structure we have built. Designed by Snøhetta, the boardwalk winds through the landscape with constantly changing widths, radii, and elevations, making every section a unique custom build. Distinctive features—including a suspended cargo-net gathering space, integrated seating, and a complex slanted guardrail system—required innovative engineering, precision craftsmanship, and extensive on-site fabrication.
The project also presented extraordinary sustainability requirements. Every material, from FSC-certified lumber to structural steel and fasteners, had to meet some of the industry's highest environmental standards in pursuit of Living Building Challenge, LEED, and SITES certifications. Combined with the harsh climate and remote location of the Badlands, these requirements created one of the most technically demanding projects our team has undertaken.
For Modular Trail Structures, this project represents far more than an engineering achievement. It demonstrates our ability to collaborate with world-class architects, contractors, and project partners on one of the nation's most significant cultural destinations. As a small company trusted with a landmark project of this scale, we are proud to have delivered a boardwalk that will connect visitors with nature for generations to come.
Every bridge and boardwalk we build becomes part of someone's story. At the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library, this boardwalk will welcome millions of visitors who will explore, reflect, celebrate, and create lasting memories—all while experiencing the landscape that shaped one of America's greatest conservationists.
