The boardwalk at Wightman Park in Pittsburgh, PA, was constructed to enhance accessibility and provide a safe, enjoyable pathway for visitors. Modular Trail Structures spearheaded the project, utilizing a streamlined, efficient process to install the boardwalk. The initiative began with a detailed site assessment, followed by the design phase, where the layout and materials were meticulously planned to ensure both functionality and environmental compatibility.

The construction process involved prefabricating the boardwalk components off-site, which minimized environmental disruption and reduced on-site construction time. The modules were then transported to Wightman Park, where they were assembled and installed with precision. This method allowed for a quicker, more efficient installation compared to traditional on-site building techniques.

The boardwalk was built to address several needs within the park. Primarily, it provides a safe, stable walking surface for visitors, including those with mobility challenges, thus enhancing the park's accessibility. Additionally, it helps to protect the park’s natural environment by providing a designated path that reduces soil compaction and vegetation damage caused by foot traffic.

A variety of materials were used in the boardwalk's construction. The main structure is composed of durable, weather-resistant materials designed to withstand heavy use and varying weather conditions. The decking is made from high-performance composite materials that offer a low-maintenance, long-lasting surface, while the support structures are crafted from Cedar-toned treated lumber and steel, ensuring stability and longevity. These materials were chosen for their sustainability, durability, and minimal environmental impact, aligning with the project's commitment to ecological preservation.
